TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT PHONE CARD
READ THE FINE PRINT!
There seems to be a "price per minute war" going on in the phone card industry. Fact is, the lower you go in price per minute, the more add-on charges you'll find.
Connection fees and service fees are the norm, not the exception in the industry. Most consumers only see the price per minute and the maximum minutes on the card. They fail to read the card terms and are feeling "taken" when the minutes drop like a lead weigh. This is not to say that they are not a useful card, for long talks these cards will serve you well.
It is VERY IMPORTANT to purchase the phone card that best suits your calling pattern. Below are some tips in picking the right phone card
DOMESTIC CALLING:
1. If you make frequent shorter calls, averaging less than 10 minutes, use a no connection fee card.
2. If you make fewer, longer calls averaging over 10 minutes or more, choose a lower price per minute card with a reasonable connection fee. (Could be up to 79 cents depending upon how low the per minute rate) You can expect to pay a usage fee and weekly or bi-monthly maintenace fee on top of the connect fee.
3. If your calling pattern varies, consider using both a no connection fee card and a lower rate card.
INTERNATIONAL CALLING:
(One-Way from USA)
1. Most cards with low domestic rates or no connection fees weighted for domestic calling, will not give you the lowest international rates.
2. A card weighted for international calling will usually have a higher than avearge domestic rate.
3. There are many cards offering low international rates to certain parts of the world and often some of your lowest rates can be found on this type of product. Just as in domestic calling let your calling pattern and average talk time determine whether to choose a lower rate with connect fees or a bit higher rate without connect fees.
INTERNATIONAL CALLING:
(Calling cell phones from USA)
1. Don't assume the rate stated to the country your calling applies to cell phones as well. In fact, unless otherwise stated rates are considerably higher for calls made to International cell phones.
INTERNATIONAL CALLING:
(Call back from other countries)
Two way or call back cards are not widely available because of the difficulty in dealing with some countries and the tariff issues. This is the card you want for traveling or staying abroad. Not all countries participate.
